No Rules

I was chatting today with another artist over espressos, and came into the subject of progression. He mentioned that he thought that I had a very solid style but it seemed my pictures were looking very much the same. I needed to take more risks and creative with "no rules". The conversation made me think a lot. I would have to say that I do agree with him, I feel like my work is good but I have this goal to make it more, I want it bigger, and more detailed. In a way I want it to explored. I find though progress is sometimes a slow process, and it naturally grows if you let it. I thought I'd try and break some of my rules and so created this piece.

Patron Relations

I was talking to my father the other day about customer relations, or the idea of keeping in touch with the people who will/have bought your product/art. It's not a new idea but it is one I would like to be better at. The simple act of emailing someone a thank you after they have bought a piece, or sending a personal invite to an upcoming show, can make a huge difference in return customers. Plus it gives that special touch that makes people enjoy the art more because they respect the person who created it. I would like to train myself to get better at this, to build some kind of system that works in keeping in touch. I also noticed that it is very very important to just send replies to any questions I recieve. Someone who like's your art and then feels neglected will start to not like your art as much. I personally have artwork I love and then have found out I wasn't that much for the person who had created it. It was disapointment. So for anyone who I haven't email replies to, send sticker trades to, or anything else, I'm very sorry I will try and do better in the future. Plus honestly I remember every single person who I was suppose to email back but didn't, it strange how it sticks in the mind.

Pressure Builds, Life Moves

I sit here at school. I want to submit my works to another school that starts in another few months. It is the top school in Copenhagen for the arts, and the pressure is building. I seem to be a master of last minute projects, not that I do everything last minute but just that with most things I feel calm about them being done close to the due date. BUT with this school submit I feel uneasy and nervous, maybe it's because all the other art students have been talking about trying to get into this school for the last half year, it's been made into such a big deal, that I'm making it into something huge in return.

I guess in the end I must ask myself what matters?

Either way, if I get in or not I still will be able to do what I love, and that is create. I can still draw, still paint, still create and still share my works with others. No art school rejection will take that away from me, no education has giving it to me either. I'm not saying that I don't want to be educated, i'd love to, but at the end of the day I'm still an artist. I can still have art shows, sell work, I can still 'make it'.

...and I think in some ways I already have made it:)

Partly Picture

So I've just been working on some different art pieces for an upcoming show in Belgium called Amaze , I'm trying to get 16 small water color paintings and 3 large prints done for the show. So far I'm got 8 partly done so I'm well on my way. The show will be in mid April and all I have to now is get some money together for the flight. I'll figure something out.

I'm also working on a large painting, the photo here is just a tiny section of it. By the time it's done I'll probably of spent 30 hours on it. I trying to train myself to use more time on a single piece, create for the sake of creating and less for the final result. I'm enjoying the process. When I'm done I would like to get some prints made so if that ever happens I'll post them.

R.I.P. you lovely HumanFive

I was very sad to hear that the artist group know as Humanfive has decided to disband due to the natural coarse of things. I was very inspired by them growing up in my early 20's in Vancouver They made work I had never seen before and it opened my eyes. There street art/graffiti was way a head of it's time and mixed medium paintings/sculptures had such life to them. It was art made with love and I could feel it. I was particularly in love with the show Bunnyhill¨, that I saw at Anti Social Gallery in 2002. I will forever remember there art work, and it is because of them I added the five when I first came upon my artist name.

Thank you Michael Swaney, Jaret Penner, Simon Redekop, TylerLepore

Still with flickr, blogger, myspace and all the other free sites, I still would like to have something that is my own. I have a half done website just waiting to be posted. Creatively I just feel a bit stuck as I have some extra coding to do (yeah for html and flash, why do they have to be so confusing at times). I wonder if having my own site will help to move the whole artist thing a long.

I heard an interview with an painter, he said that once he got a family, that "making it" didn't matter as much, it was more important that he had them. Anyone want to get married?

Time oh Time

Ok so I'm 25 years old. I know it might sound silly but I worry sometimes that it's to late for me. That I'm to old to "make it" as an artist. That I won't have ever have huge success, that I won't leave my mark and that I'm doomed to be someone who tried and became nothing but satisfactory. Of coarse I don't know what success really looks like, is it when I don't have to worry about money? is it when I know a bunch of top end artists? is it when I have a show at a high end gallery? is it when I'm working for Nike? Maybe it's just an age thing, maybe it's just that I see that I won't be able to do everything I ever wanted to in life, I won't meet everyone I want or go to every place. There is not enough time, or enough of me, to do all the paintings and projects and parties and travel. I think I'll take a breath and just look at what I have, say thank you for it, and plan some good stuff for the future.

Little Moments

I just finished a very nice water color piece this evening. It's very nice when you still surprise your self as an artist. As the years go on some times you wonder "what's the point?", then you create something you find beautiful and special and it becomes clear again. The little moments end up meaning so much in the end, and art some how lets me live and feel a live. It's like the feeling when you were a child and you got lost in your own world. To see the world as a little one is something I wish not to lose.

Please have a good day, and may you look at the world with new eyes opened:)

Things are starting to take off a bit more in Denmark, slowly the networking is paying off and I'm starting to meet some good people in the art world. Still a lot of work to do, I need to set up some connections so I can get things made. Things like silk screen t shirts, making limited edition posters, and all the other things needed for creating art product. I look forward to getting it in place in the next 4 months. I currently also have a few projects on the go, firstly my flash website is coming a long, it's just the tester (don't have an art show in December), I'm sooooooo looking forward to getting that site up and running, it's been a year since I've had a personal site that didn't just involve my flickr account. I also am doing a bunch of merch design for a blog conference in Vancouver, and have a few little art submits to get done (mag in brazil, tiny christmas art thingy) but the coolest thing is I've been asked to sell works at Art Rebels they're good people so I'm happy about that. Oh and just wanted to say that I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm bragging, I know when I read other artist news and they keep going on about "great" projects, it doesn't do much for me. Don't worry, its art, I'll have slow ass times coming up soon:)

Cheers
