Undo, Redue

Just coming up with some new paintings, riding a creative wave. I've been thinking that sometimes I need to shut out what I hear others say about what direction I should go in. I seem to have friends tell me that my artwork is more graphic design, almost implying that I don't make art, but I feel more like an artist that does design the side. I like stuff to look good but it doesn't make it all just design. There is a soul or a strangeness that makes it art to me, I mean look at the two pieces below, one is lovely and one is violent, but they certainly are not trying to sell you a consumer product.

Digital Sketching

As I'm slowly starting to drawing bigger and more complex pictures (very slowly) I've come to realize the importance of pre drawing out my ideas. One of the ways I do this is I scan in the original "not done" drawing and then add element digitally in photoshop just to give a feel on how it will look. It's a great way to try new things without the risk of destroying the piece with a mistake. I find doing larger pieces takes a lot more brain power, and a newer less "freestyle" way of thinking.

Float

January comes to a close, and I'm looking more and more forward to the lighter months a head. I reached a bit of a creative block recently, strangely the thing that unblocked it was going out and putting up posters. Now the ideas are starting up again. I realize I need constant projects to keep myself a float. I had a teacher ask me the other day if I had "figured out what I wanted to do with life" The question struck me as not odd but nieve. I thought I was already doing what I wanted to with life, at the age of 26 I think life just "happens" to me. I trust and hope for the best but I can't control my fate, I just do, I just create. I can seek things, but honestly I don't even know what I fully want.

No Photos

I went to a big national gallery today with my camera. Strangely the only thing I wanted to take a photo of was the "no photo" sign.

Soft Tri

Well the vacation is over and it's time to get back to art making. This month see's lot's design work, so I got to get on those draft to send out to clients. It's always nice to start the year off with work and focus. Also must send some images for a mag that are a bit over due, I guess things that don't pay can sometimes be a tiny bit late.....but not to late.

Bow Tie

Well another week and I'm off my vacation. It's been strangely nice not doing a lot of art the last few weeks. I guess it shows that even artist need little breaks from creating. I do feel though like something is missing when I'm not painting or drawing much.

2009 is almost around the corner, it's going to be a fun year I think. I'll be starting a new printing class in January, it will be nice to sharpen my printing skills. I realize I enjoy printing and mass producing my art. I'll also be starting up on a few design jobs right off the bat, Northern Voice 09 poster, that's always a hit, and a possible childrens book. Of coarse the new year will also bring it's challenges, as I'm fairly new to the Copenhagen art scene it's going to take a lot of work to climb that ladder. It's like starting from the bottom, as not a lot of doors open when you are new, you got to do small things (cafe shows, free murals, etc). It takes time before people start wanting to work with you.

I guess it's called paying your dues:)
